FAQs
Where do I go to read a few pages of your book?
Pages of Don't Call Me Michael, Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down, and I Dare You Disaster are available on Amazon.
What do you talk about at your author visits to schools?
I discuss how I ended up getting published, the struggles of finding a publishing company, and I also discuss the writing process. I help students come up with ideas for stories and explain the need for editing. Please see the Presentations page for more information.
Do you write every day?
No. I usually try to write each morning, but some mornings I just don't have any ideas. I am a "stress free writer." I am writing for enjoyment so I don't give myself a tight schedule. If I have ideas coming, I write. If not, I do other things. I always have a notepad handy to jot down ideas.
How do you begin your stories?
I start with a "what if" idea. I try to think of a realistic situation kids might face. Then I ask, "What if?" In my book, Don't Call Me Michael, the "what if" was: What if a fourth grade class was full of great kids that had enjoyed a wonderful year and a new kid arrives in April? This new kid is a bully and disrupts everything. Then I develop the characters and the rest of the story based on the "what if."
